Culinary Institute is developed and overseen by a culinary expert (Chef Jim Rio) and operates inside the Civitan Village. The culinary program has its own café, demonstration kitchen and future development of a garden (March 2014). The program assists participants in designing an individualized healthy qualify of life plan through education, nutrition, exercise and recreation. It also creates employment opportunities through job training in the hospitality industry with on-site job training supervised by job coaches, tiered curriculum to gain food handlers license, menu planning, preparing and the delivery of meals to under-served youth throughout the year.
Program accomplishments to date:
- Program participants, with the supervision of our Chef and job coaches, catered a wedding event for 200 guests as well as a catering event for 50 during January 2014.
- Through our partnership with the Arizona department of Education’s Summer Food Service Program (SFSP), our program participants prepared and delivered over 35,000 meals in 2013 to youth that qualified for the free and reduced lunch program during the summer months.
